Greensboro is the third largest city based on population in North Carolina and the largest city in Guilford County. The city is located at the intersection of two major interstate highways, the I-85 and the I-40 in the Piedmont region of central North Carolina. The High Point -- Greensboro -- Winston-Salem cities form the Piedmont Triad region with a population of approximately 1.6 million people. In the early 1800's Greensboro was established to become the new county center for courts and government since it was more close to the geographical center of Guilford County than the estabilished facilities in the town of Guilford.
