I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a more appropriate place to celebrate Independence Day than in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the U.S.A. Philly is currently celebrating an 11-day “Wawa Welcome America!” festival, which kicked off on June 24th and will end with a bang (literally) on the 4th of July.

This patriotic festival is full of free concerts, a flag-waving parade, and, of course, fireworks! If you are interested in the nation’s largest free outdoor fourth of July concert, well, Philadelphia is the place to be! None other than The Roots will be headlining the concert, which begins at 8pm, followed by a bangin’ fireworks display on Benjamin Franklin Parkway after 9:30pm! Other featured artists will include: Michael McDonald, Estelle, Earth Wind & Fire, Sara Bareilles and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

It is highly recommended that you arrive early and come prepared with lawn chairs, blankets, and a picnic. The best place to see the concert and the fireworks on the Fourth will be to watch from Benjamin Franklin Parkway, where giant screens and speakers will broadcast the concert.

If you’re not into the concert, other great places to watch the fireworks from are: Lemon Hill, Boathouse Row, Kelly Drive, Martin Luther King Drive, and the Schuylkill River Park. During the day you can celebrate at the “Party on the Parkway Festival” from noon-6pm. This family-friendly festival stretches along Benjamin Franklin Parkway from The Franklin to the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

It is important to note that both the inner and outer lanes of Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be closed to traffic, for the first time ever. Check out this helpful Parking Guide or avoid driving and take advantage of Philly’s public transportation.
