For aquarium enthusiasts, fish keeping is a far cry from the bowl on the counter that houses the little goldfish your kid won at the ball toss at the fair. An aquarium is an entirely different matter, with far more responsibility and gadgetry than most other people even imagine. Creating a fun and unique underwater habitat for your aquarium creatures makes for a fantastic hobby.

Choosing the right aquarium is the first step. Glass aquariums have a slight green tint, are easier to clean and harder to scratch, while acrylic aquariums have no tint and weigh less, but are more susceptible to scratches. Determining the size and shape of an aquarium will depend on where you plan on placing it in your home. Aquarium enthusiasts will likely have a prominent spot all picked out and cleared.

Heating the aquarium is another important aspect.  Some research is necessary to determine the ideal water temperature for the animals and plants you plan to keep. If the water is too cold it will shock the fish. If you choose tropical species the water needs to remain warm. When deciding on a heater, be sure it is powerful enough to adequately heat whatever aquarium size you have chosen. Another item needed is the filtration system. The purpose of this system is to filter out particles and harmful chemicals. Make sure the filtration system is appropriate for the tank size and setup type as well.

Now comes the fun part – decorating! Get as creative as you’d like. Make an underwater fantasyland, pirate themed, castle ruins, sunken ship, or any other tank friendly decor! Don’t forget that part of dressing your tank is choosing a sand or gravel bottom. This aspect is not only for looks; it contains bacteria and microorganisms needed to break down harmful tank chemicals. After the aquarium is complete, let it “cycle” for a few days or weeks, giving the filter and the plants a chance to build up a little ecosystem before adding your fish. Be sure to choose compatible species that won’t outgrow the aquarium.
