In 1932, Detroit Artists Market was established by Mrs. H. Lee Simpson. It began during the Great Depression resulting from the local artists need to make a living. It is a nonprofit, contemporary gallery that showcases and sells work by both emerging and established artists in the area. In addition to providing income for these artists, a goal of DAM is to engage the public and educate the youth.

This year celebrates the gallery’s 80th year of local art exhibition. The Detroit’s Artists Market: The First 80 Years runs from now through May 24, 2012 and will be shown in the Detroit Historical Museum’s Community Gallery. The pieces displayed give visitors a chance to see the range of art that has impacted the history of the museum.

While you are visiting this exhibit and learning about the different art trends over the decades, be sure to explore other shows on display. This is a great opportunity to support local artists and gain some knowledge in the process. Stay updated by looking at the Detroit Artists Market Facebook.
